Moon and Tides - An Art & Science Workshop by Hunters Point Park Conservancy & North Brooklyn Community Boathouse

Adults and teens accompanied by an adult are welcome.

We start on time.

The East River isn't actually a river at all—it's a tidal strait, pulled in and out twice a day by the moon. Its tides once shaped the salt marshes that covered much of New York City's waterfront, creating rich habitats that supported an abundance of life long before humans arrived to notice.

Join us for a free, adult-oriented workshop open to all experience levels. We'll begin with a short slideshow exploring the science and folklore of the moon and tides—from why we get two high tides a day to the Man in the Moon, moon-made-of-cheese legends, and the real origin of the word lunatic.

Then it's time to make art. You'll paint, draw and cut out your own scene inside a small cardboard shadow box, building a layered, three-dimensional moon-and-water world with humor, whimsy, or fantasy. Moon phases, ocean waves, werewolves, rabbits, cheese wheels—or something entirely your own. Bring your imagination and see where it takes you.

The class is led by Monica Schroeder, a professional scientific illustrator and watercolorist.

All materials will be provided, but you're welcome to bring your own favorite supplies if you prefer.

Space and materials are LIMITED: YOU MUST BE REGISTERED

Public Paddle: Community Canoeing & Volunteers Needed (August 22, 2026)

Our Public Paddle series let us fulfill our mission: enabling safe, responsible, access to our waterways, and educating residents to be stewards of the history, ecology and sustainability of the waterways of Newtown Creek and the adjacent East River.

The event is open to the public from 12-3PM.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the paddle! We welcome folks to sign up for volunteer shifts that include:

General set up for the event; tables, chairs, tents, etc.
Getting folks registered and collecting signed waivers
Fitting participants with paddles, live vests, and getting them ready for paddling
Launching the big canoes
Trip leaders and “big boat sterners” for paddling the big boats (for those who qualify)
Cleanup and putting everything away at the end of the day
Hanging out and enjoying our wonderful community!

On-land volunteers are needed from 1130 - 3PM. Bow and Stern Paddlers from 11AM-230PM, with a second shift from 230PM-4PM to do the final paddle and put the boats away.

Food and drinks will be provided.

If you are interested, please register and select the shift that works best so we can plan accordingly! You may sign up for multiple shifts. Volunteers are welcome to take part in the event and join a canoe trip.

Please note: Inclement weather date is Sunday Aug 23. It would be helpful if you are available both dates.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Bushwick Inlet Public Paddle (August 23, 2026)

Kayak Public Paddle at Bushwick Inlet Park

On Sunday, August 23rd, North Brooklyn Community Boathouse (NBCB) will offer free public kayaking at Bushwick Inlet Park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

This will be NBCB's second public paddle at the park since its recent renovation.

The public is invited to paddle from 1pm to 3pm.

We are looking for the following volunteer support:

Trip leaders and trip assistants to help on the water.
On-land folks (no experience necessary) to support sign-up and registration, fitting PFDs and paddles, and helping launch and land paddlers.

On-land volunteers are required from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Meet @ Bushwick Inlet Park.

Trip assistants and trip leaders will be required from 12pm to 4pm to help paddle boats from Queens Landing to the inlet and back.

What to wear and bring

On Mondays in August, we'll have good conditions for trips on the East River after work for five weeks in a row.

Waffle day commemorates the patenting of the first US waffle iron in 1869 by Corneliuis Swartout in Troy NY. Waffles will not be provided - but they will be appreciated if you bring some!

This will be a Roosevelt Circ in the big canoes.

Remember to dress for the conditions, bring something warm, water and a snack.

KAYAK: Advanced: Battle of Brooklyn 250 Year Anniversary (August 29, 2026)

Kayak: Battle of Brooklyn at 250 Years

250 years ago to the day, the first battle following the adoption of the Declaration of Independence took place in modern day South Brooklyn, with military operations culminating August 27-29th after months of anticipation. Our own East River, formerly known as the Sound River in 1776, and wider New York Harbor played a crucial role in military operations and made it so whoever controlled New York controlled the colonies.

Starting with an hour long classroom session, you will learn a high level history about what life was like in Greenpoint leading up to the summer of 1776, the key players of the Culper Spy Ring, how one of the most pivotal weather events in history changed the course of the war, and how New York Harbor connects it all.

Then, we will launch back in time to see the sights for ourselves. We will paddle to Gowanus Creek, stopping intermittently along the way to contextualize New York in this time frame and see where one of the most consequential crossings in military history took place.

Since this is such a long paddle, this is also a great opportunity to gear up for the Manhattan Circ and get some mileage under your belt. Join the waitlist so we're able to vet everyone's skills.

ACA LEVEL 2: Essentials of Canoe Touring (September 12, 2026)

ACA Level 2: Essentials of CANOE TOURING

This is an official American Canoe Association (ACA) course for the training and assessment for L2 Essentials of Canoe Touring . You have to be an ACA member to take this class and obtain certification.

This a comprehensive two day intermediate course that's strongly encouraged for trip assistants/ sterners to strengthen their skills, and required for anyone advancing in the ACA, or becoming a trip leader.

ACA LEVEL 2: Essentials of Canoe Touring

Spots are limited, and priority will be given to NBCB members who support our program as trip assistants/ regular canoe sterners.

If you are interested in joining this class please add yourself to the wait-list. We will process registrations and confirm participants in the next few days.

Saturday will be held at ACA Camp Sebago from 10:AM to 5PM.
Sunday training and assessment will be held Bushwick Inlet - start time expected 11AM.

For those joining, we will provide further details and help organize transport closer to the date.
