What to wear and bring

As the nights get longer, they're creeping into our canoeing time on both ends. For this trip, we'll meet right as the sun rises over Newtown Creek.

We'll decide what to do based on who signs up. We might practice strokes, paddling straight, sterning, or just try to get as far as we can before we have to turn back. If there's something in particular you'd like to work on, put it in the comments when you sign up.

I know it's early, but please arrive on time and ready to take canoes out.

Remember to dress for the conditions, especially since it's getting chilly. Please no cotton! Bring something warm, water and a snack.

What to wear and bring

Dress to get wet, bring water, a snack. Please wear only synthetic clothing - NO COTTON. As the water temperature is decreasing, you also may consider wearing light neoprene, especially if you easily get cold.

Our trips sometimes have an active wait list - last minute cancellations or "no shows" could impact your ability to register for future trips.

What to wear and bring

The overnight circumnavigation of Manhattan is a beloved NBCB speciality and tradition! We'll be paddling together for approximately 10 hours including 2-3 stops along the way. Stamina and an adventurous spirit are the major prerequisites for participation. If you're unsure about whether this trip is right for you please reach out to Erica.

The plan is to take our 29' Langley Canoes; registration will begin with space for one boat and I'll adjust as needed (please do sign up on the waitlist if the first 7 spots are full). Final boat assignments will depend on the number of actual participants).

Volunteers Needed: Big Canoe Paddle with Open House New York (OHNY)

Help NBCB host an afternoon of big canoe paddling as a host site for this year's Open House New York festival.

The OHNY paddle will function similarly to our Public Paddle series and will guide participants on short trips on Newtown creek/mouth of the East River in our 29-foot voyageur canoes.

We are looking for volunteers to help with this Sunday afternoon paddle! We welcome folks to sign up for volunteer shifts that include:

Our volunteers will work directly with OHNY volunteers who manage sign ups and will help us with the on-land tasks.

Getting folks registered and collecting signed waivers
Fitting participants with paddles, live vests, and getting them ready for paddling
Trip leaders and “big boat sterners” for paddling the big boats (for those who qualify)
Setup, cleanup and putting everything away at the end of the day
Hanging out and enjoying our wonderful community!

Food will be provided for lunch.

The event runs as a ticketed event with trips leaving at approximately 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Volunteer shifts are as follows:

On Land 1# ~ 11:30-2:15pm
On Land 2# ~ 2:15pm - 4:45pm
On Water 1# - 11:30 - 2:45PM
On Water 2# - 2:45 - 5pm

If you are interested, please register and select the shift that works best so we can plan accordingly! Volunteers are welcome to take part in the event and join a canoe trip.

What to wear and bring

Once more, we venture around your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs, in the (hopefully) warm light of day!

*This is a trip for advanced paddlers -- but by that we really mean in terms of endurance and goodwill! The trip in the Langley canoes does not require technical skills. What's most important is your willingness to be a part of a collaborative day-long effort.

Registration is not currently open. If you are interested, please e-mail Michael and Brian, and we'll discuss whom we can fit on the trip.

The trip will be around ten hours of paddling with three breaks. We intend to let the river do as much of the work as possible. But all participants need to be ready to paddle and to deal with any weather or complications that might arise.

If you are not sure whether you are qualified for this trip, please e-mail Michael (michael at thelasthaskell dot com) to ask. We can take only paddlers who can with good will paddle for up to three hours at a stretch (three times in a row!).

We will be taking both big canoes, with seven or eight people in each. You'll need to bring some food, money for other food, plenty of water, and clothes for any weather we might encounter.
