Kayak Trip Assisting: Cliff Notes for Aspiring Trip Assistants
Are you an intermediate kayaker with the time, skills, and mindset to take greater responsibility on the water? Want to help make more trips possible this summer on the East River?
This on-land workshop is for kayakers who are ready to step up as trip assistants. We’ll cover essential safety and leadership topics including:
Marine radio use and trip planning
“Rules of the Road” for shared waterways
Gear selection and boat fit for diverse paddlers
Risk assessment and on-water rescue considerations
How to prepare before a trip to avoid problems during it
You’ll also learn what it means to support a group on the water—from communication and teamwork to situational awareness and sound judgment.
Requirements:
Must be an NBCB-assessed intermediate kayaker
ACA Level 2 skills or plans to pursue ACA L2 certification (or equivalent experience) are recommended, but not required
