Volunteers Needed: Canoeing on Newtown Creek with Open House NY

Registration

  • Bow paddler for the first three trips of the day (12, 12:45, 1:30 departures)
  • Bow paddler for the final two trips of the day (departing 2:15 and 3pm).
  • Stern paddler for the first three trips of the day (12, 12:45, 1:30 departures)
  • Stern paddler for the final two trips of the day (departing 2:15 and 3pm).
  • Help get set up, get the boats in the water, run first trip
  • Help run trips, get waivers, fit PFDs, and serve food and drinks.
  • Help with the late trips and cleaning up after the Public Paddle, and put the boats away.
  • We want to see you for as long as we can — maybe stay all day! Leave a note to tell us how long you can help out.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the paddle!

This year NBCB is participating in Open House NY with Newtown Creek Canoeing on Saturday, October 18th!

OHNY presents a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce members of the broader NYC community to canoeing, our beloved creek, and NBCB.  Tickets are already sold out!  You can find more details here: https://ohny.org/place/newtown-creek-canoeing-with-north-brooklyn-community-boathouse/

We would love for folks to support this event by helping out with one or more volunteer shifts, as described below.

Volunteers will help with:

  • Launching the big boats

  • Trip leaders and “Big boat stern-ers” for paddling the big boats

  • Setting up the tent, laying out snacks and other necessities (hand sanitizer, sunscreen, etc.), and prepping paddling equipment. 

  • Fitting participants with PFDs, paddles, and anything else they need to get on the water

  • Distributing and collecting waivers

  • Sharing information about our organization

  • Filling seats on the canoes in the event of no shows

If you are interested, please register as a volunteer and select the shift that works best for you on our calendar.  Note that the shifts are timed differently from the public paddles, as they're aligned with the schedule of timed/ticketed 30 minute trips.

  • Volunteer Shift 1: Early: 11:00 am - 12:15 pm (launching big boats and set up)

  • Volunteer Shift 2: Middle: 12:00 pm - 2:15 pm

  • Volunteer Shift 3: Late: 2:15 pm - 4:30 pm

  • Volunteer Shift X: Multiple or irregular shifts. Please leave a note with your availability.

Here is the trip schedule:

Trip1: 12:00pm — 12:45pm

Trip 2: 12:45pm — 1:30pm

Trip 3: 1:30pm — 2:15pm

Trip 4: 2:15pm — 3:00pm

Trip 5: 3:00pm — 3:45pm

It’s an ambitious schedule that will require all hands on deck to run smoothly! We’ll be taking out groups in both big canoes for each trip, so we need as many trip leaders/big canoe sterners as we can get for this special event.
