Come join us for an afternoon of training in our Langley 29-foot big canoe(s). The goal of this trip is to grow our list of competent paddlers who can stern (steer) and bow (front seat) in our 14-person canoes. These canoes are used heavily in our public programming and increasing our pool of paddlers capable of guiding these vessels is key to our community outreach. They're also really fun to paddle!
The training session will start on the Newtown Creek and practice various big boat maneuvers (rotating paddlers into different roles) before heading to Bushwick Inlet to practice capsizing and recovering a big canoe.
If you are interested in joining please add yourself to the wait-list and put a few notes in the registration section about why you'd like to participate (notes for the trip leader) . If you are already trained as big canoe paddler come along to refresh your skills. We will move people from the wait-list to the main registration and confirm participants in the next few days.
Remember to dress for the conditions, bring something warm, water and a snack. Be prepared to get wet at the end for the rescue practice and have a dry set of clothes to change into on return.
