Break the Monotony Day was born out of the realization that people all over the world, from every culture and every generation, have one thing that stays consistent. That would be consistency. Once we settle into a pattern we find it so comfortable that even if it would greatly benefit us to vary what we do day to day, staying in our daily habits is far too easy. Break the Monotony Day pushes us to make a change, however minor, in our routine and see what could happen.
What better way to break the monotony than by getting in a canoe? Instead of the usual route down to the Williamsburg Bridge and back, we'll take a detour into Bushwick Inlet, where we can break the monotony by switching bow and stern so that everyone can get a chance to try steering. After a little practice in the inlet, we'll head back towards Newtown Creek while watching a hopefully gorgeous New York City sunset.
Remember to dress for the conditions, bring something warm, water and a snack.
