Intro to Kayaking - 101
Come out with us and learn the basics of kayaking: how to select your kayak, paddle, gear, get in and out of the boat, paddle forward, etc. We’ll start with on-land instruction, then head out on the water to apply what we’ve covered and practice boat control.
This trip is intended for first- or second-time paddlers who are excited to get on the water but haven’t had the chance yet.
If you haven't yet, please fill out the self assessment. Thanks =)
An early season beginner friendly paddle, where we paddle into the creek, and turn around in time to catch the sunset where the creek meets the east river. We may see some birds, and learn about our maritime infrastructure along the way. If you feel like getting on the water, but are feeling a bit lazy — consider bringing an instrument to serenade us paddlers from the middle seats as we go.
Let's paddle for our freedom! After the trip, you are going to be ready for your BBQ. Come to learn the basics of kayaking: how to select your kayak, paddle, gear, get inside and out of the vessel, paddle forward, etc. Bring water and a snack.
Please fill out our self assessment, so your name will appear on our list of members.
Avoid jeans or other heavy cotton clothing. Bring dry clothes in case you get wet

ART & SCIENCE: Nature Watercolors for Stress Relief: Marine Life
An inspiring, beginner-friendly adult watercolor workshop at Queens Landing Environmental Education Center
Let the natural beauty of Hunters Point Park spark your creativity in this calming watercolor workshop designed for all skill levels.
In the first half of the class, you’ll enjoy hands-on, guided play with watercolor techniques that will build your confidence and skills. We’ll explore water and paint flow, brush control, wet-on-wet color mixing, color lifting, and a few helpful tips on mixing. We’ll also touch on materials and ideas to help you start (or deepen) your own practice at home.
After a short break, we’ll demystify the basics of color theory and introduce the idea of a “mother color”—a technique that brings soothing color harmony to your work. Then, using the vibrant natural world around us—tides, birds, oysters, marine life, crabs, waves, jellyfish, more—you’ll create a watercolor painting that’s uniquely your own.
This class is perfect for beginners or for experienced watercolorists looking for a relaxed, guided experience.
All materials are provided: Watercolor paints, brushes, paper, and a cardboard mat for easy framing of your finished artwork.
